HP deskjet842C

my hp deskjet 842C prints only in pink and black? I installed a new print head, I've tried to clean the jets with alcohol pads, nothing seems to help. I called Hp customer help line, and they said it could be fixed somehow using the printer setup feature? What does that intail? Of course they tried to get me to purchase a block of tech support due to my printer being out of warranty. Don't want to spend unnecssary money, when I can purchase a new printer for $20-30 dollars. Just don't want to purchase right now due to budget constraints. Please help

besides the inkjets themselves, you should clean the contacts found where the ink cart seats. Use a clean damp cloth and wipe down then dry. Reseat the ink carts and check results. You can also, look at the ribbon cables found along the ink cart area and check for excessive wear&tear or breakage. Also, verify the date on the ink carts, old ink can behave as noted. If a true new ink cart(good date) and all else doesn't seem to correct the problem, then a bad printer. Yeah, a new one will be the better option to continue on.

You can also, remove printer from system and try a "self-test". reveiew how your model# accesses such to start one.

What OS? If Vista did you download and install Vista driver(s)? If not and it is Vista, it very well could be a software issue. If it is XP it should just plug and play, then I would say it is likely a printer harware issue.
