HP Deskjet 9800 printing on 12x12 paper

Sep 21, 2006 4:39AM PDT

I am having trouble getting my Hp DJ 9800 to print correctly on 12x12 paper. I am using Scrapbook Factory Deluxe 3.0 software. I have contacted them and also HP support with NO suggestions at all offered!

I have all the settings configured in the printer to use 12x12 paper. However, when I do a print preview, I see only part of my image. It looks like there is an EXTRA 1/2'' white margin on the right and about a 2 1/2'' margin on the bottom. It basically cuts off my page and leaves that part white.

I have all margins set to the HP minimum for this printer which is 0.25''. That is the only white I want to see, yet I still get all the extra at the bottom and on the right side. I have updated the printer driver as well.

Does anyone have a suggestion that I can try? I have nearly $400 in this printer specifically to print these 12x12 scrapbook pages, and I am not able to do that.

Running a nearly new Dell Dimension with Windows XP, 512 RAM and 70 G of free hard drive space.

Thanks in advance!

Is Scrapbook Factory Deluxe 3.0 software a HP title?
Sep 21, 2006 5:56AM PDT

I can see why HP would not answer. Try the maker of Scrapbook Factory Deluxe 3.0 software next time.

You may find yourself without much support but I've had some luck with Open Office and odd paper sizes.

Scrapbook Factory Deluxe is not an HP title, and.....

I started by calling their tech. support. The program works fine, it just won't show a correct print preview or print a 12x12 page correctly. They told me at that point that their software was working as it should and that it was a printer issue.

The tech. people at HP even admitted that it was some sort of printer "issue," however, they could offer me no help at all.

So it's a preview issue or a print issue?
Sep 24, 2006 11:02PM PDT

I've found print previews to not be accurate or even close sometimes. Some may call this a bug that must be fixed but if it prints OK then it is what it is, a preview and not a preview proofing tool.

If we take a trip over to the Apple world, their view on print preview is entirely different and they do take pains to get the preview to work. Go figure when software quality will improve on our PCs.

If it's just the preview I fear you may be short of luck getting that fixed.

Not just a preview issue -- does not print correctly either

The image I see in the print preview issue is exactly what appears when the page prints out. Even though all settings are fixed for 12x12 paper, I have a white space about 1" on the right and 2.5-3" on the bottom where my image is simply cut off.

Thanks for the input, Bob. Happy

I'll keep working on it.

Cheat. (how to)
Sep 25, 2006 2:29AM PDT

Sometimes when it fails like that I have to cheat.

How? Install something like PDF995 and print it to a PDF set to that print size. Use FOXIT's PDF viewer to check if we are making it from the application to a proper output first. This sidesteps the printer for a moment.

If we can't create a PDF proper then the issue falls back to the application and not the printer.

Another cheat is to export it to some other application. I have a number of free ones such as FreeSerif, Open Office and more that I call into play when either making odd things or troubleshooting where the issue is.

In closing all three softwares of application, video and printer drivers all play a factor. Make sure all are the latest.
