HP DeskJet 648C

I have a HP DeskJet 648C printer and an iMac computer (system 10.3.9). A week ago the printer wouldn't print - all jobs were stopped in the que - and someone suggested that I put in a new color cartridge. I did, and then the printer printed.

However, it will only print documents if I select the print icon in the menu bar. It won't print if I go to "FILE" and drag down to "PRINT." My whole application - Microsoft Word, Adobe, whatever - quits.
any suggestions?
