HP DeskJet 612C Printer problems

Mar 19, 2005 11:50AM PST

Windows 98SE, HP Pavilion 6630, I.E. 6.0 SP1

I am having problems with my printer. When I try to print something I get this message: There was an error writing to LPT1: for the Printer HP DeskJet 610C Series. Your file waiting was deleted.

Also prior to that when I tried to print a page, the Resume light would blink and when I pressed it, it still blinked. I had to turn off the printer for it to stop blinking, and when I turned it on again, a blank page would come out.

I have checked the ink cartrages, cleaned the printer, and checked HP's troubleshooting pages and can't figure out what the problem is. Can anyone help me or do I need a new printer? It's five years old.

TIA

Shirley

A 5 year old printer

might be on its way out. Go to the control panel, open printers, double click on your printer and delete any jobs listed there. Close out and try to print something. If that doesn't work, I'd suggest you uninstall the printer and the software then reinstall everything. Do you have the installation disk?

Yes, I've uninstalled and reinstalled software,

Removed cable from PC and printer and reconnected, and now I get the message: The printer service you are trying to perform cannot be performed because the computer has lost communication with the printer. I'm sure the connections are ok.

I was trying to print a "test page" when I got this message.

Don't know what to try next. Any more suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

Shirley, I Had An HP 612C Once

It didn't last long and when it died, it had similar problems to the ones you are experiencing. It's an expensive printer and certainly not worth repairing. If the suggestions Gail is providing above don't get it up and running, then you will need a new printer.. A repair person will charge more than the printer is worth.

Hope this helps.

New problem
Mar 20, 2005 8:50AM PST

I know the printer is old, but just wanted to see if I could fix it. I've gone to HP's Support site and tried a lot of fixes to no success. I decided to uninstall and reinstall again. Half way through the reinstall I received the following message:

"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor. Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 0167.bff9227c."

I closed the "box" and continued with the installation.
Perhaps I shouldn't have done this.

I'd buy a new printer but this PC is also five years old and I don't know if I can find one to work with this PC. They all seem to require a different cable connection to the PC than the one I am using now. I know there are a couple of empty slots in back of the PC. I was looking at a HP DeskJet 3745v and it requires a USB 2.0 full-speed compliant cable. I'm just not sure if that will work on this PC. Unfortunately we live in a small town and the only place to shop is WalMart, or Best Buy. Neither place has been very helpful.

If you can think of anything else for me to try to fix the printer I'll greatly appreciate it. If not, I'll keep looking for a printer that will be compatible with my old HP Pavilion 6630. Some day, when I get to the "big city" I will get a whole new system. Happy Thanks for any and all suggestions.

If your computer is also 5 years old

then you are most likely running Windows 98. You might be able to find an inexpensive printer that is compatible with that operating system. Most printers today use a USB connection instead of a parallel port. Check the internet and see what you find.

Printers With Parallel Ports Are Available..

Just an example at the Epson site. Not a bad printer for $100 dollars plus a $20 rebate:

Epson Stylus C86

Check other sites and you may be able to find something you prefer.

Hope this helps.

Parallel Port

Thanks everyone! So that's what I should look for. A printer with a parallel port. I didn't have a clue as to what to look for.Happy I will check some web sites to see what I can find. Tks. again.

You can buy either

if your computer has any USB ports that work. If you do, you can buy a printer that connects that way.

If you can find a printer that connects using a parallel port, it is reasonably priced and suits your needs, I'd say buy it.
