HP forum

First off, my Printer has given me over 15 years of reliable service. My OS is Windows XP.
My problem is:
Unable to Print, (it has a new black ink cartridge installed)
Sequence of process; a) from Word pad document File menu select Print and proceed, b) printer pulls in about 4 inches of paper, then stops, c) Printer icon on screen notes document to be printed, but Error is indicated, d) I push the Off button on printer and paper comes out with no printing. Also TEST PRINT does not work.
I can not determine the Error, so I go on internet and find:

HP Print and Scan Doctor, and proceed....
Screen 1) Welcome the following products are visible from your computer:
Product: HP Deskjet 612C; Connect: USB; Software status: Installed
Screen 2) The selected product is not connected. Please select the method you want to use to connect your product. [ USB ] {Network-wireless } {Networked- wired ]
(My printer is powered from wall plug, and connected to computer by PORT LPT1, which is not a choice to select from.

How do I determine what the Error is, and how to fix it? Hopefully to continue printing for another 15 years!

TEST PRINT does not work.

It sounds like it's failed. Your cheapest fix is to find another 612c on ebay that works so you can slip in the same printer without having to reload any drivers.

PS. By test I mean the one that is in the printer.

I've followed various suggestions on this forum, including going through the HP Troubleshooter(offline) again.
I then did a Forum suggested cleaning routine with a damp paper towel.
Result: Printer goes thru printer process without an Error screen. It sounded like it was printing, "eh,eh,eh,eh, etc, then spit out paper > blank No Error, but no ink on paper!
Took the new black cartridge out (yep, has ink) and replaced with previous cartridge ( has a little ink left).
Same original Print Error shows up on screen, (never tells me what the Error is in detail).
Put new cartridge back in, as before, no Error, but paper has no ink on it.
[Color cartridge has a little ink left, though I always set Printing Preference to Black/White.]

Anyway I'm asking y'all to take another look at this, with the new info, Thanks.

Sounds like a failed printer.

When the usual doesn't play out the cheap exit is a working printer. There are many prior discussions on this printer and all are very old. Given these are pretty cheap on ebay, take a working one to avoid redoing any XP drivers and more.
