Hp/Compaq NX5000 will not hold power and boot up

Jul 9, 2006 5:13AM PDT

I've checked the AC Adapter output & looks great. The battery appears to be holding a charge too. I get the same symptom with & w/o the battery in place. When I press the power button, the power LED lights and there is a 1-2 second flicker of the HD LED. It goes off and then the PC powers down. I never get to the BIOS Setup option screen, much less the Win/XP splash screen. The whole sequence is over in as little as 3 seconds. I just replaced the HD since the original didn't seem to be spinning up. No change.
Can this model of laptop be operated on AC power with the battery removed?
Suggestions...help...wishes of sympathy?!?!?

Yes.

I've removed hard disks and batteries from notebooks to troubleshoot power issues. Also taken out sticks of RAM, and whatever else is optional.

Wild guesses since I'm not there. How does the power connection look and feel? If loose, a common failure point since some don't treat it with care.

After that you swap in a new motherboard and see if that cures it.

HP NX 5000 Power Problem
May 4, 2007 5:55PM PDT

I have the same problem with my HP NX5000 laptop. I have tried everything (memory tests, upgrades and so on)except replace the motherboard. The unit will not start at all with the battery in and will start some of the time with it out allthough often has the same problem described. A little power light flicker like a flat battery is installed then nothing. If you persist after up to a dozen attempts it will start. Any ideas that does not involve a new motherboard. I might just leave it on. Can this be a power plug? Can I fix it?

I think you answered it.

Those that have solder irons would ask where to get the plug. So with all due respect you may have answered your question.

In your case you'll want to swap the mainboard.

HP Laptop

Looking at the datasheet I'd sat its a knock-off of the origional ZT series but with a P-4 CPU.. Needs the DC jack replaced period.. Weve done a ton of these..

HP NX 5000 Power Problem
May 5, 2007 7:11PM PDT

Thanks. Another problem is that if the battery is in place the system freezes after a few minutes, even with all power management left out of system. Perhaps the poor power connection causes this problem also.

I am wondering if using a docking station could temporarily solve the problem and prove the cause? At $19 it is pretty cheap. Is it likely that the faulty connection will still cause problems?.

I wonder why you didn't try it.

At 19 bucks that's nothing compared to a new laptop, a trip to a repair counter or shipping the unit to anyone.

If you are unsure just contact ikenfixit.com to get it done.

nx 5000 problems

Well the docking station worked for a week. Then not. Then I dismantled the unit and a friend soldered the jack. Worked fine for another week. Then took it to a Laptop repairer. Claims to have soldered power circuit. Works occasionally if it is not bumped then goes into blank screen with green power light and no response. Should have just replaced the motherboard straight up. Any one know where I can get the best price on a new motherboard?

Shop around.

Ebay is sometimes a good roll of the dice. A note to ikenfixit.com and notefix.com as well.

NX 5000 Problems
Jun 16, 2007 6:31PM PDT

Thanks. The cheapest price for a new motherboard is around $550US plus delivery. Not many old units and hard to know if they are OK with the info provided. Oddly the laptop still starts if you press down on the case in the area of the right hinge/processor and will stop if the case flexs due to the screen hinge moving at all. I can keep it going by keeping screen flat on the desk or pressed up against a wall to stop any flexing in the case. After seeing the number of two or three year old HPs with the same problem on the net I think this must be a design flaw in the case that cracks the motherboard assembly. The case is cut away in the area of the hinge above the power socket and moves alot when the screen is moved. This moves the heat pipe connected to the processer also.

I had same problem with IBM....this is what I did.....

Take battery out and unplug external power. Now, hold down on/off button for at least 30 seconds. Try a reboot. Good luck!

I have same problem with my Nx5000
Aug 17, 2008 5:31PM PDT

i am facing the same problem with my Nx 5000. i can switch on the system by pressing the body or mother board near the CPU/Power socket .i open the system and searched for any dry solder in the mother board but i couldn't find anything .i assume that it is some PCB track cut in some where near the cpu area by the LCD Lid operation .if some one solved this problem kindly share the information .so that i can use jumpers to correct the track cut issue .

Update.

Ikenfixit is now not a noted source.

-> But if you type LAPTOP POWER JACK into google.com you find pictures and more about such a repair. Be aware that you may never find the EXACT INSTRUCTIONS since there are some million laptop designs out there. But any good technician can use these as a guide to fix this.

Again, the information is available to those that look for it. Those that just ask after being told where it is are best to be told to take it to the repair center.

Did you ever determine the cause/fix of your prob.

I did!

Just last month a family member returned a dead laptop. Just like above the laptop jack needed repair so I did that.

Sadly I'm finding more and more people consider a solder iron "high tech."

NX5000 A/C Power jack
May 25, 2009 10:48AM PDT

I have inspected my NX5000 A/C power jack. Center contact pole seems stable, doesn't wiggle if touched.
Outside housing seems stable. Are there other signs jack may be bad? Thanks.

This one didn't wiggle.

But the electrical path was not complete so it didn't charge. Beyond the solder iron I also use a Volt Meter.

If you don't want to use these tools consider replacing the lowest cost parts first then the next costly, and so on till it works or you decide it's not worth the costs.

NX5000 weak power connection
May 31, 2009 12:05PM PDT

I read someplace a little while ago after troubleshooting my matched pair of NX5000 that both failed in a similar fashion. I learned that even micro cracks in the solder joint will drop the voltage and cause a power drop and shut down.

Sorry I don't have the reference handy.

Good luck
