Resolved Question

HP Compaq 6720s orange wi-fi switch/button

Aug 24, 2014 3:02AM PDT

Hello,

The wi-fi switch (physical) on my hp 6720s keeps staying orange.

Upon boot the light is blue, however when windows starts, the light becomes orange.

The operating system is Windows XP SP3. I recently installed linux on my laptop and I boot it through a USB.

In Device Manager I have:
Broadcom 802.11a/b/g WLAN
Intel(R) 82562GT 10/100 Network Connection

They are both enabled.

Wi-fi doesn't work Happy

Any help in solving this issue is appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi and thanks for the replies!

Indeed, I solved the problem by installing HP Wireless Assistant.

Cheers.

Answer
TRUE!!!

I have another DV6000 model and the software and driver is buggy so even when the WiFi was working, the color of the light could be incorrect. Also, some Linux don't support this model. Installing XP is hard. I had to use a web site and follow the arcane directions to get ours working but let's say you installed the HELPER APP as well as the right driver. Then the WiFi is dead and you'll want to go get some 10 buck USB WiFi.

A few questions
Aug 24, 2014 6:19AM PDT

Hello and thanks for the answer!

Could the fact that I recently installed Linux have anything to do with this? The Linux version is Mint 16. Could there have been an automatic setting within Linux that could mess up any of the initial settings/ drivers etc of the WLAN Adapter?

When you say the software and drivers are buggy are you referring to the WLAN Adapter's software or the Linux drivers/software?

What do you mean by Helper App?

Thanks!

Lots of questions?

Please number them in the future.

1. Linux. unlikely.
2. Windows XP and HP's drivers, yup. I have the machine to prove it and it's on the web.
3. Helper app = that app that turns the WiFi on and off. That switch function is not baked into the OS or the driver.

Can you share the install routing web page you used? Then I can point out the step where we install the helper app that connects that switch to the driver etc.

There are posts with thousands of answers out there but let's read how you installed XP.

Found my notes.

The switch needs the "hp wireless assistant." Without that HELPER APP (please remember that term) then the switch does nothing. Much like the goggles on RadioActive Man at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juFZh92MUOY
