HP a712n - I want to upgrade, Need suggestions

Hello, I have the HP a712n (trust me I wouldn't have bought it, It was a gift) nonetheless I'm looking to upgrade. Here is the stats

I want a video card, ATI or Nvidia (which one is better?) and another stick of 512 RAM (I think thats the biggest I can get) Any other suggestions I would great appreciate, Thanks for your time everyone.

Right, you have the Intel 845GV chipset, which is the Integrated on board Intel Extreme 2 graphics, and no AGP or PCI-Express x16 slots. About the highest video card to get would be the PCI GeForce 5700LE.
