What is this about USB Windows?
Jul 20, 2016 7:56AM PDT

Windows 7 came on DVD and USB versions were nor from Microsoft and therefore something other than stock issues.

My test would be to use a stock issue Microsoft DVD to re-test that failure. If it fails I'd reset the BIOS to defaults then re-test again and if it fails call it a hardware failure.

I can't guess the full story of this laptop but reading http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docLocale=en_US&docId=emr_na-c01507066 it looks to have shipped with XP or Vista. Try it with the factory OS.

It Still Might Be A Heat Issue
Jul 22, 2016 10:34AM PDT

You didn't tell us whether you have opened up the laptop and used compressed air to blow out all the fans, vents, heatsink and processor area, and all areas of the computer. Also, if the computer is fairly old and has had a little rough handling, it might be time for some new thermal paste between the processor and heatsink. If you haven't done that, do so now.

This link provides about 12 pages of cleaning instructions which include re-applying heatsink thermal paste. Read them all.

Yes there js heating issue but not critical I by passed it by putting cooling fan under laptop. It passed 2 hours HDD test, memory test and startup test. So starting a windows should not be only heat problem

Step i followed to trouble

I tried to boot windows from usb drive but same cant reach to windows login screen.

I removed hard disk and tried to boot with unbuntu without installing. - failed its not booting after few sec of boot it power off.

Ram is fine, hdd is fine, all cleared memory test, heat problem by passed

I'm not sure about power supply and mother board. Is there any way to find defect in mother board,

Should i remove cmos battry and reinsert it? I have resetted all connection of laptop to ensure Everything is connected right.

I can't boot any operating system. No error code, no beep sound, no led code everything is normal u till it reaches to logon screen.

If you say its a heat problem then why it is turning off on certain position everytime, and passing 2 houra HDD test?

NOTE- F8 is not working

What is this about USB again?
Jul 23, 2016 12:21PM PDT

There are only a few special versions of Windows that run from USB. Unless you have one of those it should boot and fail.

The fact that Ubuntu is not working is a bad sign. And the 2 hour HDD test only tells us the HDD may have passed testing, not that the machine is ready to run Windows or Ubuntu.

The laptop is a SERIES and until you reveal the model and maybe the BIOS version I think you'll be in limbo.

Your tech should be talking about cleaning, and replacing heatsink compound. Are they telling you this?

And What Happens When You Start In Safe Mode?
Jul 24, 2016 4:08PM PDT

Will it get past the login screen and run?

You mention that you can't format and reinstall the OS because it doesn't get past the login screen. Logging in is not required to format and install the OS from a CD/DVD drive. Formatting and reinstalling Windows 7 is generally done by booting from the Windows installation disk NOT from a USB drive. Or do you not have a CD/DVD drive on your computer? Have you tried doing a full reinstall of the operating system back to factory conditions?

Hope this helps.

Re: Safe Mode

Indeed, f8 to get into Safe mode only works when booting an already installed Windows.

To boot from another bootable medium (like a bootable Linux disk or stick, a Windows to go stick, or a bootable Windows stick) you have to boot from it. Either go into the BIOS setup to change the boot priority or use another key to choose the boot device. All that should be in the user manual of the PC or motherboard.

At Seven Years Old, You're Lucky It's Working At All..But
Jul 25, 2016 10:56AM PDT

...as I suggested earlier, it's time for new thermal paste between heatsink and processor.

And here, we simply replace the old DVD writer.. .They're not that expensive, usually fairly easy to replace on your own, and it solves many of your problems.

Hope this helps.

Try this...
Jul 22, 2016 11:06AM PDT

Boot into the safemode boot menu from MS using the F8 key. There a small menu will appear, select the <safemode with networking>, then run whatever test you like. after testing, reboot again to boot menu appearing in that menu should be other selections, select <enable boot logging>. That should provide a line-by-line item boot process. You want to know if it stops or breaks away into error or similar, what was the last line item? That's a clue to what maybe at fault, redo again if you didn't catch it.

I offer this because during the boot cycle it starts adding the drivers, etc. and that usually entails all the upper and more complex drivers, etc., while in safemode usually refers to lower or simpler drivers. I also suggest, while that has already be offered to again, air clean the vents out because even minor obstructions cause heat build-up. Alas, the damage maybe already done be some HP models tend to degrade under heat stress and some component is already comprised and has lower heat tolerance, basically it's faltering.

Let me answer the heat question.
Jul 24, 2016 4:26PM PDT

The reason the machine does not shut down during HDD testing is that the CPU doesn't have to do much during this test run. It doesn't have to go in high speed (turbo) and can sleep waiting for the HDD to respond.

We have a number of posts here but still missing are the exact model. Also missing is age, your story of machine care, canned air use and if past a few years if you knew to replace the heatsink compound.

Another thing I run into is a dead laptop battery. All sorts of weird issues can occur with that one.

You could ask the same about oil in a car.

That compound does dry, crack and fail over the years. It's a limited life material and it's a 2 buck item. I can't guess why folk push back on a cheap thing but it's good for the industry (more sales, less repairs.) I will not say that's it but it's on the list of things that have fixed it.
