In parting, if you have 8GB or more, don't upgrade memory but look to change the boot HDD to SSD.

Thank you, low end lap top, poorly funded student. HP told me can't be done (no surprise) working at school on line and i appreciate the help
Sometimes there is something else we can do to salvage a poor performing laptop. My best upgrades today are not always RAM but changing the HDD to SSD.
Hey, planning for the upgrade, determine what type of memory the computer has, the maximum amount of memory the computer can use, and the amount of memory your operating system can support. Moreover, read Page 12 of your Hp Laptop manual: recommendations for the memory upgrade summary:
Two customer-accessible/upgradable memory module slots
Support for DDR3L (1600-MHz) dual channel
Support for 8GB of system RAM in the following configurations:
● 8GB×1 or 4096-MB×2
●6GB + 2 GB
●2GB x2
●2GBx1
How to obtain your system memory information (Memory brand, model, frequency and capacity)
- Easiest way: install/ run CPU-Z software and check memory MAIN tab and SPD tab with every module information ( upload screenshots here for more assistance if needed)
- From Bios post or after you enter your laptop Bios Setup utility.
