My employer, a Fortune 50 company,...

...told its employees that IF they were scheduled to work today, and IF they had no valid written medical excuse or documented emergency, that they would be summarily fired. We'll see if the company's serious...

While I find my gut reaction to say YEAH, I wonder

Is one day absenses without a medical or other 'emergency' validation normally grounds for dismissal?

While I think the rally to support illegal activity stinks, I can't see that it can be treated as any other "lay out".

Very few companies I know of will really make a case of being out if you call in, even with just an excuse of personal business, if it's rarely done. You normally get a tick on the number of unexcused absences, or something like that. If you have enough in a defined peroid of time, then you may be disciplined from having a reprimand put in your file to time off without pay (for hourly workers, I think it's normally a week first time)

Normally accumlative absences incurr greater penalities up to dismissal for cause. And normally a set peroid (often a year) without any events resulting in formal disciplinary actions erases the slate.

Almost impossible to fire.

Wife once worked for a very large company and possibly called in sick maybe once a year. Their policy was to send out a nurse on all sick call-in's, really just to see if you are sick.

When I worked for the same company, my boss said my time was my own, and didn't care when or what days I came in as long as the department ran Ok.

Nothing here

I live in a small community in central CA.
But I guess the cities (from the pictures I've seen) are seeing alot of protesting. I say don't waste the opportunity to arrest and deport, it is the only econommically feasible way to deport them.

Advice to all, go to work.

I heard folks in Cali are digging the clear freeways...

True? Are some legal Americans hoping for a few more days of the "strike"?

it's true
May 1, 2006 1:40PM PDT

the freeways into San Francisco this morning we're clear, usually a 2-4 hour drive(80 Miles) during rush hour, my neighbor made it to his work in 70 minutes. The speed limit is 65 to 70.

I say now lets try really hard to get rid of the illegals this will be a very nice place to live again.

Our newspaper is just guessing...

Probably know more tomorrow. Our city is majority Mexican American. According to this AM newspaper (one paper a day for home delivery):

"Some urged their employees to come to work despite calls for a broad economic boycott as a show of immigrants' strength. Others announced they would let workers out early to participate in events, or, unsure of just what today would bring , would close for the day."

Noticed the reporter didn't use "illegal" immigrants.

Worked yesterday at the grocery store
May 2, 2006 6:12AM PDT

Double coupons and first day of food stamps - the place was packed. Got out half hour late.

Heard on man on the radio saying that he had to go to the emergency room (don't know what city) and it was usually an 8-9 hour wait and he was in and out in 90 minutes.

Emergency Rooms.....
May 2, 2006 6:24AM PDT

Around here it depends on that little person who checks (shortly after you come in) your blood pressure, temperature, and to see if you are currently in pain.

When I went to a hospital ER last December for chest pains, when I received the little persons interview and checks, I had no current pain at the immediate time.
After 9 hours of me & wife waiting to be called, I went to the desk and said that I was going outside and call 911 so that an ambulance would bring me in to get fast treatment like I observed. In 5 minutes they took me through the ER doors, and it was later discovered that I needed a 'stint' placed inside a vein of my heart.

So, it depends on the condition at the time of appearing as to how long you wait around here.

PS.....
May 2, 2006 6:36AM PDT

Couple days after discharge from the hospital I suddenly came down with a temperature which rose to over 103F. almost 104F. Checking into the same hospital ER they immediately took me in and it was determined that I had (and they admitted) hospital acquired pneumonia(sp). Took a 7 day additional stay to get well.

Same thing happen to me John:
May 2, 2006 7:10AM PDT

"Hospital acquired pneumonia" I was in and out of the hospital 7 times last year and 3 of them was for pneumonia. The last 2 times I was in the whole month of Oct. and just recently the whole month of Feb. They admit it..."If you ain't got it, they will give it to you" I swear, I will die at home before I call that ambulance again.

You know I just got 2 blood transfusions today. (Oncology outpatient) This is an on going thing. About once a month I need blood and inbetween, each week I get those darepoetin injections. Bone marrow isn't making the red blood cells I need or somethings eating them up.) Anyway I was wondering with all this activity out there yeasterday, where is this blood is coming from. I may becoming an illegal immigrant and not even know it Sad

From what I read in todays newspaper
May 2, 2006 11:28AM PDT

it doesn't look like a major impact.

San Antonio has a population of 1,144,646 people according to the 2000 census, the 9th largest city in the U.S. 58% Hispanic, 32% White, 7% African American.
The police estimated 18,000 attended the April 10th immigration rally, but participants in yesterdays march said fewer than that attended. They didn't list any specific number. I couldn't tell any difference than any other day around here.
