General discussion

Howdy all, and CNet stinks!

Apr 7, 2004 5:30AM PDT

Just wanted to tell everyone hello, and let you know we made it to North Carolina. Our house isn't ready yet, so we're staying with Greg's grandma til we can move in. I tried to catch up on the forum today, but I've been at it over an hour and a half and have managed to get about 15 posts read on this dial-up connection. Wasn't this forum supposed to be faster?? Wink

I'm probably still gonna be scarce for awhile, but when I get back on a decent connection....LOOK OUT!

Love you all!
Cindi

Glad all is going well with the move ...
Apr 7, 2004 5:51AM PDT

... there seems to be a distinctly slower than normal connection on Dialup. If I'm on a high speed connection I don't see a difference in speed for CNet vs. other sites I visit. But on a dialup it is awful!

Re: CNet stinks! And, sorry about the move with your house not ready.
Apr 7, 2004 6:50AM PDT

I have dial-up and the forums throughout CNet are a hit and miss on speed as compared to other web sites. If you can find another hour try to dig a hole to the Feedback forum for some comments there, including mine about how the only thing the Ops Dept has fixed so far is the "Read" feature since this forum system started 5 months ago.

Hope you can get moved to your new house soon and back here. I don't intend to post much until they fix the dang 'crawling'.

... an' gid out dar an' show dem so called carpenters how it's supposed to be done! Stiff upper lip and all that rot, Old Girl. Happy

Somebody has GOT to come up with a way to save all the graphics and separate components so's you don't have to download them every dang page! Please!?! All the geniuses who could do it are probably on DSL.

Dear James,

I'm on dial-up and CNet ain't that bad here by comparison with other sites. But if I can "save" images to speed up the process, then I wouldn't mind learning this tweek.

Thanks.

PS Happy Easter and please tell us if you will see your Mum?

Mom is up and down.
Apr 9, 2004 3:57AM PDT

I brought her to the house Wednesday almost all day. She had homemade clam chowder for lunch, and 15 bean soup, homemade biscuits, and sausage for supper. Talked to her brother and some friends long distance, but had to end the calls due to coughing fits. She got around better using the walker instead of the wheelchair the entire time she was here. Next day I got a call that she was sick with pneumonia. I went by and they had her on oxygen and her blood gas had dropped into the 80's. Later it was back up to 93-94 by the time I left. They had a mobile X-ray come and take a chest X-ray and go9t her started on Levoquin. Today, early I dropped by and she was out of bed into her wheelchair after dialysis and tired but better. The X-ray showed some intrusion into lower part of one lung, so she'll recover OK. Great day so sat outside with her for an hour, then my teen dropped by from college which is next door to the home and I took off. Hopefully she'll be mostly kicked of this by Sunday so she can come by for the evening.

Dear James

Thank you. I'm glad your Mum was able to spend a nice day with you on Wednesday. It is clearly hard that she has to cope with many things at the same time and I only hope that she is able to get back to being OK so as to be with you on Sunday. Very best wishes.

Mom was able to spend Easter with us. Teens and kid went to an after church function for kids and me, wife and Mom stopped by Bob Evans and spent the afternoon together. She's still got the cough and light pneumonia, but improving steadily.

I hope the weather is being kind to you ...

Dear James

Thank you again lovely news.

I sometimes wonder if pneumonia is something that we should be developing a preventative measure for, as older people seem far more susceptible and less able to fight it off. Hopefully you are in a sunny part of the US at the moment and not in the stormy part which was mentioned in another thread.

No doubt your Mum was delighted to be able to spend time with your family at this time, as I'm sure she will have been looking forward to it and I'm very glad to hear that this came about.

In Netscape 7 --->Edit-->Preferences--->Advanced--->Cache

pick whatever setting you desire. If you don't have it compare each time then it will speed things up.

In IE --->Tools--->Internet Options--->General--->Temporary Internet Files--->Settings.

Pick the one that works best for you. I have mine set at "Everytime you start Internet Explorer". Don't use the "Every time" setting. That aids at some sites, but must today already have a "no_cache" tag on their pages anyway.

Bless you Sir! May you live a thousand years!

IE ---> ... Never ---> Cross fingers ---> Happy

I had mine set like you do: "Everytime you start Internet Explorer". Don't know if Never will help, but worth a try, uuH? I don't like the sound of: "no_cache" tag, particularly since my theory is that CNet's "preferences" gathering crapola is probably what is making it so slow in the first place.

There are 44 instances of href="http and 67 href=" in the source of page your message is on and the same in the Reply page. Whad app wid at???

I'll let you know if Never helps.

OOOH YEAAAH!

The header comes up in a flash. Then there's a kind'a long wait for the tree. Disgustingly, the longest wait is for the web-bug, and then the footer pops right up. Big improvement over all. You are a gentleman and a scholar, James!

Now I'll have to do the reading on Hosts files, and stick the bug's addys in there one by one.

It's a good day!

Hi Cindi;

Glad you made it OK.Happy and Yep, CNet stinks. As it grows, so go the loads. Slow and slower. My guess is, CNet needs more bandwidth to keep up.

Welcome again, I hope maybe spring will stay now to make you at home
Apr 7, 2004 11:17AM PDT

It's been a bit cool in the east for April, but today warmed up a bit.

Hopefully everything will go quickly for your house finishing and you get moved in quickly. April and May can be a bit stormy sometimes in NC.

I'm just now catching up on reading some of the posts here and missed this info evidently. I'm right at the NC border near Tenn...wondering if you are close enough for me to visit (or vice versa)

Welcome to the cordial South, Cindi, and YES, CNet stinks!
Apr 9, 2004 12:58AM PDT

Although obsolete, I still like this old definition of the word, cordial
:1 obsolete : of or relating to the heart, M-W

I assume you have an ample supply of muscle creams to take care of the moving pains Happy

And, CNET is the absolute woooorst site that I know of -- slow does not begin to describe the performance. Really sad Sad

I'm having fairly good speed on dialup using the Netscape 7 now, allowing their CSS stylesheet since they got message marking working. CNET changed something that started dragging Netscape 4.8 through the mud.
