Question

how- w/7 won't update

Jan 16, 2014 10:13PM PST

how do I solve this? There are numerous updates backed up now and they won't install. Initially it will say installed then within minutes the failure is announced. I have run every anti virus in all modes with no success. I used the Microsoft 'fixes' - haha. Now it seems I am at the point of reformatting. Are there any more ideas that I could pursue before being drastic?

Since I can't find details here such as the KB that failed and am not at your PC this could be something or nothing.

I've seen too many reasons for the failures and some just fail for months. Only the OCD seem to be overly concerned. The others might list a few KB numbers to see if such are something to worry about.

Prediction?

If I go ahead and reformat what would be my odds on getting into this problem again? Should I take it to a tech?
Thanks

I'd make that bet.

I have never had to take such to a tech. All I ever needed was what didn't install so I could look it over.

nobody can tell.

You've been asked to supply the KB-numbers of the failed updates and you didn't yet.
If you can add the error number and what the Windows update log tells more about the possible causes of the error that might be helpful also. But start with the KB-number and the names of the failed updates only.

I have now installed several updates by trying one by one. Some still fail. I'll be back with the KB numbers.

some KB

will show up as updates, but not be applicable to your situation. In XP I've had various Office Readers, but updates for the Office Programs also would try and install and not be able to do so. I'd end up having to reject them and set to never offer them again.

No need to do them one by one, I think. Their succes or failure (with some details) is clear from Windows Update history in your Internet Explorer.

I have tried to reach Microsoft. They take messages but don't return calls.
