How to watch TV/record with Windows Media Center?

I just got a Dell 9300 with Windows Media Center and an external TV Tuner. I'm trying to figure out if there is a way that I can record TV shows on my laptop while I'm watching other stations on my TV. It seems like if I want to record, I have to watch the station I'm recording. This seems odd to me if this is the case because there is more flexibility in using an old fashioned VCR to do this simple task.
Any ideas on if this is possible? thanks
