The usual reason is a missing/uninstalled CODEC.
http://www.moviecodec.com has most of them, but the likely one you want is DivX.

Friends send me AVI files all the time, and tell me that they have no trouble viewing them on Windows Media Player. I run XP Pro, with the latest version of Winamp and Media Player, but I can't get the stupid AVI files to ever play
Is there a way to convert them? or another free program that I can use to view them on? It's so frustrating to be told that I MUST see something, and then I can't...bummer. I'd appreciate any help you can give...thanks ![]()
