How to view AVI files

Nov 23, 2004 8:07PM PST

Hi Happy Friends send me AVI files all the time, and tell me that they have no trouble viewing them on Windows Media Player. I run XP Pro, with the latest version of Winamp and Media Player, but I can't get the stupid AVI files to ever play Sad Is there a way to convert them? or another free program that I can use to view them on? It's so frustrating to be told that I MUST see something, and then I can't...bummer. I'd appreciate any help you can give...thanks Happy

Re: How to view AVI files. CODEC?

The usual reason is a missing/uninstalled CODEC.

http://www.moviecodec.com has most of them, but the likely one you want is DivX.

How did you try to play the avi files ? Double click; double click and then choose a player, or open from WMP ? Is your WMP configured to play avi flies ? What exactly do you mean by "can't get the avi flies to play" i.e. what happened ?

If it is a codec problem (I would say so), you have two options:

1_Find which codec you need, download and install it.
2_Install a bunch of codecs and hope that you got the right one.

Of course option 1 is better, but if you decide for number 2, then I would recommend to download and install nimo codec pack:

You will, most durely, get the codec you need. By the way, try other player too, like BSPlayer or ZoomPlayer.
