How to verify that an eamil has been received.

Sep 9, 2005 7:22AM PDT

How can I know if an email I send has been opened and read by the person it was sent to? I currently use msn, and don't see that listed. Are there email servers that can do this?

No. Here's why.

What we use today is based on a standard called SMTP and POP3 email servers. These do not enforce that a read reciept be honored.

If you need such, just ask they reply.

I know less than nothing about MSN

but check the email options that you have and see if you have one that deals with 'receipts' and if so, enable it so that you get notified that the other person has accepted the email. However, they also have the option of denying sending back the receipt even if they accept the actual email. I doubt if there is anything that can notify you that they have actually READ the email though...only that they have received it.

might be with Google.

Although I have never had the desire or need, I don't doubt, if you put a short description of your need into Google, you'll find places that will trace your email's.

Unless

Unless you are using Outlook Express with your msn.com or hotmail.com address, you cannot request a read receipt. However if you use Outlook Express with your account(requires a fee unless you have a reallt old account) on your open letter you can click on tools, and then click on request read receipt. If the person has any respect, they will send you a read receipt if they get the read receipt message, however they are not required to send you a read receipt.

Hope this helps

My computer and office has no respect.

At the office and home, our email filters automatically strip read receipts and more. It's not because of respect we do this but to stem the tide of spam and leaking information.

I do respect you, but you won't get a read receipt.
