If you want VLC as your default media player then select it as such. A right click use of media file w/o any setting per se, for media file and when the small menu pops-up, select(Open with) VLC player.

Change any default pgm. under MS, do the following:

I suggest as in my initial response click on the file rather than click on VLC and then pick a file. That will work, but until you get used to VLC for fast results, click on file. Though once you change the default media player VLC automatically launches.

Just install VLC leaving the default settings as they are.

If you happen to have accidentally installed the browser plug ins - your browser will play videos in VLC instead of flash player. You can simply remove the plug in from your browser(s).

There's a decent user guide that includes playback, streaming video capture and saving videos using VLC. You can visit a site, play a video then grab the stream and save it to your machine for playback. Most users don't even know about this capability.
