Question

How to use the down arrow in Adobe Reader

Jun 29, 2013 1:21AM PDT

I use Windows XP on a Dell PC and the Firefox browser.

For several months I haven't been able to use the down arrow in Adobe reader for PDFs. I had Adobe reader X and then upgraded to XI but that didn't help.

When I open PDF pages on the Internet I can scroll with the "bubble" in the middle and the up arrow, but not the down arrow button. I've always preferred scrolling with the down arrow. When I mouse over the down arrow, I get a double arrow that won't let me click on the down arrow.

Help appreciated. Kim

Hi Kim,

Are you using a desktop or laptop?

Are you able to use to down arrow key on any other webpage on the internet? Please try using the down arrow key on word or excel and check the functionality.

Please share the findings.

Thanks and Regards,
Appu S

The down arrow key is disabled only in pdf files. It works fine everywhere else.

To get things more clear a few questions:
1. Do you mean the down arrow on your keyboard, or a down arrow in a toolbar in the reader (I don't use Adobe, so maybe there isn't even such an arrow in the toolbar)? I'm asking because I don't understand how you can mouse over a key on the keyboard.
2. Does the page down key work?
3. Do you use the browser add-on (in Firefox) or the program to open the file? If it's the browser extension, does that same arrow work in the program? Adobe Reader is the program, but it could be you use the browser add-on.
4. And if it's the browser add-on, does it work in Internet Explorer?

The trouble is in Firefox

1. Do you mean the down arrow on your keyboard, or a down arrow in a toolbar in the reader (I don't use Adobe, so maybe there isn't even such an arrow in the toolbar)? - I'm referring to the toolbar on the right hand side of the page.

2. Does the page down key work? - Yes, the page down works.

3. Do you use the browser add-on (in Firefox) or the program to open the file? - Thank you for asking that question. I just discovered that the problem occurs only when opening a pdf file in Firefox. Everything's fine in IE. I don't know how to tell if it's a particular browser add-on?

Disable all other add-ons and see if it works. Then enable them again one by one to find the culprit.

Possible alternatives:
- Use foxit or nitro reader in stread of adobe one
- Set the preferences of Adobe to run the program in stead of the add-on
- The latest version of Firefox, as far as I know, comes with a built in reader. But I can't check if that is the solution of your issue or the cause.
