Question

how to use my own router with verizon fios

Mar 29, 2015 2:48PM PDT

ok,so I've had verizon fios for quite some time now, and I'm not satisfied with there router. Plus i have an apple airport extreme with dual band and it supports 802.11ac where the actiontec from verizon does not. its a 3rd gen rev i model. I have fios tv and phone and am using a coax from the ONT to the actiontec. A verizon tech told me he'd switch it to etherent when i called him back, I'm planning on running a cat6 to the airport extreme and using the actiontec as the moca bridge for guide data VOD etc..

1.what will i need to connect to from the Airport to the atec in order to get everything functioning?
2. what settings need to be changed on the atec to allow my setup using it as a bridge for my tvs.
3. should i Dmz the atec in order to receive caller id since I've heard that is a problem.
any suggestions and or tips would be greatly appreciated. i haven't been able to get a straight forward answer on the setup on any forum. Thank you!

Looks like a dead end.

I don't see a Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) system here. CAT6 is not coax and such boxes as supplied by cable and other companies are not open to tinkering.

If this was just a matter of IP networking, then you configure, etc. but you asked for so much more. What company does what you want today?

maybe this clarifies

Well i spoke to a tech at verizon and he said you can use ethernet from the ONT to the actiontec router and that'll be used for internet and he said that won't affect any fios features at all because the Coax is still plugged into the actiontec. so i was thinking instead to plug the cat6 into my router then doing a lan to lan or lan to wan? from my router to the actiontec and turning off the wireless radio on the atec still keeping the coax plugged into the atec. would this work?

Depends on your goals.

To the WAN port can cause all sorts of issues. Well discussed but from what most want it's either:

a. Set the modem to be just a modem. Now the next router takes over for all DHCP, IP duties, NAT and "router."
b. Set the second router up as a WAP (that's on the web so I don't duplicate that here) This is great for more LAN ports but we don't use the second router's WAN or much of the router's other capabilities.

I can't decode what you want from the posts so far, only your top post looks like a dead end.

goals
Mar 30, 2015 2:53AM PDT

My goal is to set my router, the airport, as the primary router and using the actiontec to only provide data for the STB like the guide and video on demand etc. I really just want to make sure this set up will work correctly I'm taking the time to run a 100ft cat6 cable through the concrete in my garage and through the attic. if this set up does not work i may go crazy. so connecting the cat6 from the ONT which port is it plugged into on my primary router? and then do i use another cat6 from my primary to the atec? if so, which ports are utilized? thanks

Since you want MoCa over cat6.

I can't see how this will work. Back to them to see what solutions they offer.

If you just want a network and we can forget VOD/guide on the other end of the cat6 then ask them how to put the modem into a bridge mode. Then you put the Ethernet cable from modem to the WAN port.

100 Feet? If this was my setup I'd go with the router as a WAP so the area near the modem part would get WiFi from that and your WAP provides service out there.

Why not the usual WAP?
Mar 30, 2015 3:08AM PDT

Google "How to use a router as a WAP."

That does not require any change to the current modem. Works great to get better WiFi and more Ethernet ports.

bridge mode?
Mar 30, 2015 3:32AM PDT

are meaning to use the airport in bridge mode?

- Collapse -
No.
Mar 30, 2015 3:38AM PDT

The first modem/router would have to get it's router part disabled to truly get all the functions moved to your next router. But I can't see why we need to do that yet. That is, I've solved coverage and other issues with the (router as a ) WAP hundreds of times last year alone.

Your top post read to me as if you want MoCa over cat6. I hope you get that by now.

I may have not been clear but no i do not want moca over cat6. and by disabling the first router you're are referring to the actiontec? would that be as simple as just turning off the wireless radio? currently my airport extreme is connected from wan to the lan of AT. and is set up as a bridge and creating my own network.

No.
Mar 30, 2015 3:55AM PDT

Your choice to disable the WiFi but that's the WAP part of the router. Not long ago you had no less than three components to make up the router.

1. Modem (the part that gets access to the internet to ethernet/other).
2. Router. The part that shares the single IP address to a LAN.
3. WAP. The part that share access over WiFi.

As long as you use the WAN port of the second router you'll have some grief. All these posts and I wonder if the usual router as a WAP would have given you most of what you wanted.

Answer
No. The fios router already has a WAP.
Mar 30, 2015 4:30AM PDT

All this and we are still in the weeds. Since the fios modem/moca/router/wap (an all in one box) has a WAP there is no need to turn that into a WAP. It already has one.

Why not turn your second router into a WAP?

I can't be specific since there are a few models of Airports but for years I've seen them used in many configurations.

I have FIOS

same modem/router, same Coax setup, and the TV set top box can be seen on the actiontec for it's On Demand access. Why can't you just plug this apple airport extreme into a LAN port on the actiontec, turn off the wifi on the actiontec, and set up the apple device for the wifi use? As for hooking to TV's, are you meaning to use internet service for viewing video sites, like Hulu?

I dont' see what's supposed to be so difficult here.

Because they wanted MoCA

"using it as a bridge for my tvs."

While it's a snap to use your own router as a WAP, they asked for the whole enchilada and now we are paring it down.

Mar 30, 2015 12:19PM PDT

so let me change the question, regardless of my first post, what do you guys suggest would be the best way to setup my airport extreme. i want the airport extreme to broadcast and use the actiontec for just the STB. sorry if this is getting tiresome but working around verizons setup is difficult.
Currently i have the airport extreme creating its own wireless network in bridge mode and ive turned off the wireless radio on the actiontec. i have the airport connected from its wan to the lan of the actiontec. any drawbacks to this setup? thanks

Back to Apple to ask how to set it as a WAP.

yes it is! i'll keep it as it is. and just to make sure, with my setup all my devices can utilize the dual band and 802.11ac of the airport extreme right?

Go ahead and do it
Nov 21, 2015 9:08AM PST

I've done this, no issues. I ran a 50ft CAT6 from the ONT to the Verizon router, and removed the coax connection entirely (I only had internet service). I did this without asking/telling Verizon. The Ethernet terminal is active by default. Never had any problems.
