How to use imported contacts when composing a msg in Gmail?

Feb 26, 2009 2:03AM PST

I have successfully exported my Thunderbird contacts in CSV format into my Gmail account. This has already been done. The contacts are now in my Gmail account. The question then is how to actually use these contacts when I compose a Gmail message.
An example I imported "johndoe@xyz.com" into Gmail. Now when I go to compose a Gmail email msg, how do I then "retrieve" johndoe's email address so I can use it when addressing the To: portion of my msg?

One more when I imported my contacts (from a CSV) file when I click on Contacts in gmail, it does not state the name of the contact on the left hand column unlike it does for the contacts I manually created.
Help! Thanks
