How to use a patch?

Jun 18, 2007 1:35PM PDT

I got a PC game and it wasn't working correctly. I wrote them and they send me a patch. What in the heck is a patch and where would I download it at? I have Windows XP. THanks

A patch is...

A patch is a fix released to resolve a known issue with the game. In your case, it should resolve the problem you're having getting the game to work correctly. If they sent the patch via e-mail you could download it wherever you like, such as to your desktop, and, assuming it's an executable, double-click it to apply the patch. Usually patches are offered on the game's official website as well. If you would like specifics let us know which game you're referring to.

Hope this helps,
John

Confused.

Thanks. So what happens to the game that is having problems? Does it automatically repair the game or is it a new game all together. I am really confused about this. The game is Paparazzi , the million dollar shot. They said it is a new patch. Thanks for your help.

It just fixes it...

The patch either modifies or replaces file(s) used by the game, thereby automatically 'repairing' the game. It doesn't require you to reinstall the game, making it a fairly painless process by comparison. Once the patch has been applied you can usually launch the game moments later as if the problem never existed.

Good luck.

Depends On The Type Of Patch...But Many...

...simply allow you to double click on the downloaded patch file and it will automatically install correctly and fix or update the game. Occasionally, there are other types of files which must be installed a different way... If you read the instructions for installing the patch, it should tell you all such information.. Have you done that?

Hope this helps.
