how to use a joystick/game pad for pc games

i have joystick/game pad designed to work with pc games played on a pc. it is usb,but the problem is that it does not work with need for speed shift ,need for speed unleashed or split second. all these are car racing games which the joystick does not work with. i have tried pro evolution soccer and it works just fine with the joystick. how can i get it to work with other games like need for speed and split second games?

Just how I find support for that app/game.

Let's take NFS for example. If I wanted to add joysticks to that I search for the maker of that app then see if they had a support forum. I bet they would have a FAQ or maybe someone asked already.
