PC's are not reliable enough to trust they will have your stuff all the time. Here it's pretty good but I have backups that just last month were put to the test. I was back in operation in 2 hours but found an item that I was not backing up but was on a system image from last year. It was a minor item that was not changed in years but it was annoying to retrieve from that old image.

Here the upgrades have been smooth but I do eject/remove/uninstall security apps to make the W10 upgrade as smooth as possible.

Do a backup, then go for it

I did exactly this upgrade 2 weeks ago (and another one to new Win10 PC). Went smoothly.
Then again, heard a lot of horror stories of upgrades hanging up while in progress, and having to reinstall the machine.

So, definitely back up your data.
You can use Windows' own backup, and I'd also add at least one other type of backup to be sure, like dropbox or just an external drive.

do a system backup first . I recommend Macrium or EaseUS Todo backup system.
And then select Windows Update in Control Panel . Click Next, and then follow the instructions.
