How To Uninstall Internet Explorer ?

Apr 9, 2007 7:50AM PDT

Hey CNet Forum Members,

I just bought my new laptop, and it has Windows Vista Ultimate as the operating system. And I'm new to vista, but I prefer Firefox.

So I wish to uninstall internet explorer from the computer, instead of just having Firefox as the default, I wanna literally take it off. Coz its of no use on my laptop.

I used to go through XP in the Add/Remove Windows Features in the Add/Remove Programs.

Sorry for the silly question ...

Hope to hear some feedback,

Shaun

You have to have Internet Explorer for the times you need to get updates from Microsoft. Just set Firefox as the default browser.

As Papa Echo said, Internet Explorer is required by various websites, as well as some software you may have installed. If Internet Explorer is removed random programs on your computer, including Windows Update and your antivirus software, may begin to fail without warning.

Aside from that, there is no simple way to install Internet Explorer. Add/Remove Programs->Windows Features in Windows XP did not even remove it, actually...it just removed the shortcut to IE while leaving it installed. To remove it you would have to 'butcher' part of the operating system, which in itself is not recommended.

In short, while it can be done it is highly advisable that you do not. Instead, just set Firefox as the default browser and ignore IE's existence except when you need it.

From within what application?

There are minor compatibility issues with Vista where Firefox may not completely become a default browser, for which there are some workarounds, but some apps are designed to always open Internet Explorer, not the default browser.
