HOW TO TRANSFER MIDI DV TAPES FROM CANON GL2 W/O FIREWIR

Dec 22, 2010 1:16AM PST

I own a Canon GL2 Camcorder with a bad firewire connection. I need to know if there is anyway I can transfer the tapes I have recorded to my PC or Mac without using the firewire connection. I am willing to buy the necessary cables/equipment/software to get this done.

Or, is there a way of having the firewire connection repaired without sending it to the factory. They want $1000.00 for repair. That is way out of my budget.

Do these tapes play in other camcorders that have firewire?

If so, try that. Also, in the past there were miniDV "decks." Did you price out those?

Firewire is really only way

As far as I know, camcorders do not send streaming video signals to the USB port, so Firewire is the only way. Yes, forget the ridiculous $1000 repair bill. You can buy a new Canon mini-DV camcorder for $300.

mini-DV camcorders

Just do a web search for mini-DV Camcorders and you should find several. The Canon ZR960 is still available new. I know DV camcorders are hard to find since the DVD and memory stick camcorders have become popular.

Is there a NEW question here? I am left to wonder if BEYOND the need to transfer tapes you needed something else.

What brand of mini DV decks would you recommend?

Yes I have priced some, but this camera was used to do streaming video. Do you know of any other options?

Good solution to bad firewire
Aug 24, 2011 11:17PM PDT

I also have a Canon GL2 with a bad firewire port. Apparently even thought firewire is hot swappable, Canon states to turn the camera and computer off before hooking firewire up. I'm sure they know of this problem but don't support it. Anyway, I have a unit called a Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge that can be purchased cheap on ebay that will allow you to hook the s-video output from the camera into it and it will transfer it to firewire out of that unit. It's a great tool for many different purposes.

You may not find the folk that discussed this to come back. Also, many don't open old threads. And we have a very incomplete post with no questions.

This old thread is closing.

You mentioned SVIDEO scheme works
Sep 5, 2015 6:26AM PDT

It is my understanding that SVIDEO doesn't carry audio, is that true? So if you SVIDEO out of the GL2, according to your reply, you carry both audio AND video into the PC ?

This is old school.

Video is on one cable, audio is on the other connections. You have to have the gear to capture it all.
