Question

How to switch 3 HDMI devices into my 2 HDMI dumb TV?

Feb 9, 2015 10:10PM PST

I have a 55" LG 5900 dumb TV w/ 2 HDMI inputs. DirecTV receiver uses HDMI1, Roku 3 uses HDMI2. I'd like to be able to input from my laptop on occasion, adding the need for a third HDMI line. Since the Roku 3 is always ON, and I would only use the laptop with DirecTV OFF, can I get a 2-into-1 HDMI switch and plug the laptop and the DirecTV receiver into it? Will the switch then recognize the ON device to input to the TV?

Or any other suggestions I'm not seeing at all?

Thanks in advance!

I owned a few auto switch HDMI switch boxes and once in a while I would have to tap the switch button. For the 20 buck thing it was I didn't consider this to be that awful. It appears none are perfect.

Even some of the higher priced HDMI switches sometimes require a button to switch inputs. YMMV.

IME though, if you aren't using the laptop daily it's not a huge issue.
