How to stop ISP from disconnecting dialup

by oldronruns / November 26, 2004 11:27 PM PST

I play chess online and often, usually when I am winning, my ISP cuts me off, Most annoying. I have tried setting Outlook Express to checking for messages frequently and even software that supposedly connects to ramdom web pages. Still get cut off. Any ideas? Are some ISPs more tolerant than others? Thanks.

Go to Internet Explorer/Options and click the Connection tab. In any of the advanced or settings or configure for your modem properties, you will find a setting that needs to be unchecked called 'disconnect if idle for XXX minutes'.....or check it and set it for 60 minutes minimum. That always worked for my dial up connection.

You may also want to check your ISP's policy on the length of time they allow for connection.

Some ISP's limit the amount of time you are allowed to stay connected.

Their web site should tell you.

Same thing happens to me....and I've done the Tools-internet options-connections thing. I Still get disconnected at least 4-5 times a day. My ISP says it's not them doing it..and blames it on the phone lines. I doubt that. Anyway, unless you get Cable or DSL, I think you'll just have to do the re-connect shuffle. If you live in a rural area like I do..your ISP choices for a local access number are VERY limited, and High Speed access in NON EXHISTANT.
For all the EXTRA TAXES I pay on my phone bill to help those in Rural areas, I sure haven't seen any improvement in 25 years.

I also live in a rural area and the phone lines are NOT good and my connection speed is lousy because of it. When I bought this new computer a few months ago, I was experiencing the same thing but my ISP had me put a few extra commands into the modem properties for extra help and I have not been disconnected unless I shut down in months. This has not improved the connection speed but I don't ever get disconnected anymore. My new machine is so much faster than my older ones were that it's plenty fast enough for my needs now. From 233MHZ to 2.08GHZ.If ever want to upgrade with speed though, I am limited to only satelite. I live too far out of town for cable or DSL. I live in an area that is also very prone to thunderstorms to the south of me so I lose the TV signal even wheh it is not storming here so I opted to keep the dialup,. Sorry if I got off topic a little but the ISP SHOULD be able to help the disconnecting problem, just as mine did.

If you have a good ISP, they can have you run a diagnostic test on the connection to determine exactly where the problem lies -- with them or with the telephone company.

Thank you all for your help. Have been fighting this issue for years and my ISP has not been helpful. I am convinced they cut me off automatically because of inactivity. The same thing has happened when I tried other ISPs. The free programs I downloaded and tried before to prevent this problem didn't work either but just for kicks I tried another program and it seems to be working. It is called Keep It Alive. So far so good. Thanks again for your efforts.
