Question

How to Speed up My Computer

Apr 18, 2017 11:25AM PDT

I have Windows Vista. I had my speed upgraded, but now it has become very slow. When I click on an icon on my main screen to go to a site it may take minutes before I am at the site. Any suggestions?

You didn't tell how your speed was upgraded, but one option would be to ask the same person to do it again (and maybe explain how he did it, so you can do it yourself next time).

And what always works, unless there are hardware issues, is to go back to factory conditions. Then it's as fast as it was when it was new 7 years (or more, so old is Vista already) ago.

Personally, I have no icons on my main screen to go to a site. Only an icon (in the task bar) to run a browser. Then there is no need to start it again for every site I want to see, but I can just type a few characters in the address bar and press enter. That's much faster.

Our last Vista was such a slug. Finally fixed it by swapping in a SSD (drive) and moving to Windows 10. It was cheaper than a new laptop.

Yes it does

On paper your isp doubled your speed but they are supplying less than half of that speed.

Sounds like a deal to me.

Are you sure?

If I visit their site, I see a news site, telling me about Caitlyn Jenners Romantic Future, the pregnacy of Serena Williams, a hidden crypt found in London and much more very interesting news, but nothing about speeding up computers.

And even if they did it (seems doubtful, at least), what did they do?

Answer
Check the ISP service
Apr 20, 2017 7:37AM PDT

It seems most here are offering you really check the service you have even if did do it right. Why, in most cases the ISP provides an onsite check to verify the speed. Further, if you have an older ISP provided box, that may not be ready for new speeds or simply is old or faulty, again the test should verify that. If not the ISP own check then another website that tests broadband speeds.

System might need cleaning
Apr 20, 2017 8:17PM PDT

Lack of space on your harddrive plus viruses beefing up affects the speed of the system. Invest in good anti-virus that helps cleaning up the system. Also, free up some space on your hard drive. Check your start up menu and tick off those programs you don't need upon start up.
