How to set up Hot Spot

Dec 21, 2019 9:17AM PST

I just gave myself a gift of a new iPad mini. I have an iPad Pro, and iPhone using AT&T. I really don't want to pay any extra for the new iPad, as I won't be using the cellular on it much, so wondered if I can use my iPhone as a hot spot and how to do it. Thanks, Peggy

Yes you can....

You need to confirm that At&t has enabled the Hot Spot feature for the phone. Ask them if it is included in your current plan. If not, ask what it would cost extra, how much data would be included and confirm how much data could be use before the connection speed is slowed down (throttled). Once setup properly, the hotspot can be manually turned on or off through the cell phone.

For iPhones I know you can just go to settings and there's a hotspot section just below the cellular and you can go to that, turn it on and then connect the other device by looking at the password in the hotspot section and that'll hopefully let you use internet

Wi-fi Hotspot

It is quite easy to set up hotspot on your iPhone and use your iPad (without cellular) on that Wi-fi hotspot. However, care should be taken that you don't share the password (mentioned on Personal Hotspot on iPhone) with any other, or else that fellow could piggyback on your mobile hotspot.

Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data > turn on Cellular or Mobile Data > turn on Personal Hotspot on the same screen > Enter the password in your iPad and then start using the Wi-fi network you have created for your device.

Set up Personal Hotspot
Go to Settings > Cellular or Settings > Personal Hotspot.
Tap Personal Hotspot, then tap the slider to turn it on.
If you don't see the option for Personal Hotspot, contact your carrier to make sure that you can use Personal Hotspot with your plan.
