How to set up a safe and reliable external SSD - Samsung SSD

Jul 24, 2015 11:23AM PDT

Howdy fellas,

I want to set up a reliable and safe external SSD hard drive to backup my most valuable / important files for long time future access:

1. Which is the most reliable file system?

2. Should I use the exFat and pre-composed system of my Samsung Portable SSD T1?

3. Is encryption future-proof or will it cause hiccups / compatibility issues in the future / worsen the reliability of my storage?

Thanks in advance.

Mike

PS: I'm on Mac OSX but i think it is a more general question anyways.

All the old FATs are

Not as reliable as JOURNELING FILE SYSTEMS (NFS, AFS, XFS, etc.)

Encryption is a fine way to ensure data recovery is impossible. If you want to lose your data, encrypt it all. It's that simple.

Cool thanks, that's what I wanted to hear.

Should I go with the Samsung T1 or rather pick a conventional EVO 850 and put it into an external enclosure?

Here I don't pay premium for that.
