Question

How to run power?

Nov 19, 2014 2:48AM PST

We have a UPS that we need to connect five desktop computers to. I've never run power more than 15' or so, and am not sure if there are any issues with doing so. Running power from each PC to the UPS would require about 25' under a raised floor. Does anyone foresee any issues with doing so? Is there a better way to connect the PCs to the UPS? Thanks!

Answer
Plenty.

Very very few UPS units could support the peak currents of 5 desktops. Since no exact model number was given be sure to ask the maker if it can handle this.

That's a good point. I'm not sure what to look for to determine capability. The UPS we have shows 1400W output. I'm assuming this is the rating I'm looking for? I'm guessing the desktops are going to be around 500-600W power supplies. Are these the ratings I should be considering?

Also, is there an issue running 25ft power cables under the raised floors if we do hook a few of these up?

UPS is an APC brand, model SURTA2000XL

Those are for your electrician and APC to answer.

http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=SURTA2000XL seems to show a very nice UPS but your question is missing so much detail that I can't guess where to start. A 25 foot power cable could be OK but what if someone used wimpy extension cords. Well, that can't be good.

When I see such a setup, there are some assurances that folk seek that I won't give for a few reasons. While it looks OK off the cuff there are factors such as wimpy extension cords and GUESSES about power draw being made. So guessing without the facts is why most can't answer. Let APC and your electrician answer this one.

I don't think so

As Robert stated, you should look for pro help. Whatever an electrician etc. should decide. I provide a specs link to help. BUT, you already want to add ext. cord or 25ft. added and also to multiple outlets.

http://www.apc.com/products/configure/index.cfm?base_sku=SURTA2000XL&totalwatts=50

The immediate provided specs is for -one PC- draw from the UPS. Add all the 5 PCs you can see you stress the UPS. You basically need either several of that same model or a true "commercial unit" best for such. Immense current draw may cause an issue for all concerns and wiring itself is an issue for any extended cords.
In other words, IMHO, I see a problem here even if within specs, you maybe too close for comfort and then what cost if this fails or worse. It's cheaper NOW to get the proper needs rather than later.
