Question

How to retrieve wireless password on a Linksys WRT54G router

Sep 3, 2016 11:34PM PDT

I'm trying out a Samsung 3 Chromebook; after charging it up overnight I tried to use it last night for the first time but when it asked me to select a network I immediately recognized mine so I selected it.

I was then asked to enter my router's password which I don't know because an employee who use to work for my brother set this all up for me more than 10 years ago.

My router is an old Linksys WRT54G; I'm currently using a 7 year old Dell Vostro 1510 laptop which has many issues and has a Windows Vista OS. Can I retrieve my old router's password or will I need to buy a new router and start out with new router information including a new router password to make this work?

If your link won't work will I have to call Linksys tech support? My DSL provider AT&T? If I buy a new router will I need to uninstall any programs associates with my Linksys WRT54G router before I install the software which comes with a new router?

Resetting the router
Sep 5, 2016 12:45AM PDT

Hi Steve.

That same link talks about what to do if the default password doesn't work under the section; What to Do If the WRT54G Default Password Won't Work.

But note what it says about the reset which "will restore all the configurations back to how it was when the router was first purchased, including its password."

I have never had to set up a router from scratch so I don't know what information is required, but I suspect it will not be too difficult.

If you do need further help it is available from Lynksys Support.

But it is worth just trying the default password first, don't you think?

New router is not essential

If I were you I would reset the router and reconfigure it, either through googling the how-tos, or by calling Linksys tech support. Assuming the router is also the modem, I would also call my internet provider @ search the right settings for my ISP on the internet.

Buying a new router would also requires you to do the above, especially if you are indeed using a modem+router device.

The most important thing to know is if your ISP connection is using ID and password. Ask your ISP first if you indeed requires one, and if you can retrieve it, which usually requires a lot of work.

Your best bet is actually asking the person who set it up.
