How to retrieve files when monitor is not working

I have a Sony VAIO (VGN-FZ140E). The screen is not working after someone accidentally hit the screen with a hard object. The laptop turns on, but the screen is so damaged that it is not recognizable. So I connect a new monitor to it, but nothing shows up on the new monitor(the monitor works with a different computer fine). Could anyone tell me what I should do to retrieve my files?

1. External monitor and Fn keys (sorry, you check the manuals.)

2. Pull the drive and put it in some enclosure or cable.
