Sorry for looking too far ahead. What steps should I be doing to figure out where the problems are. I did safe mode msconfig and one by one under selective startup unchecked each box and restarted each time. same error message appeared each time....Sorry to upset you Wink

Not upset, just trying to save some mis-steps.

I posted the link about SFC extracting the wrong setupx.dll by Microsoft (MS) in the main thread. It's up to you on the subject, but starting a new thread without the other information could have people give you bad advice.

It's your choice on the matter and I want you to succeed.

Hi Donna well if you have a boot disk and are willing to gamble a bit gfive this a try. Put in the boot disk and when if asked to use cd-rom support do so. Should be #2, now at the Next A: promt just above there should be a letter asigned to the cd-rom note this letter and then type setup/E: if this is the letter asigned to youir cd-rom. THis should start the windows 98 startup and install. This should install windows over it self and leave all other data intact Happy rocky

In a nutshell, I can use a boot to DOS and the EXTRACT COMMAND to extract any original file. To put said file into it's place, the COPY (fromhere tothere) command will finish the task.

These are simple command line skills that are best learned over time if one wants to do this sort of repair.
