Resolved Question

How to resolve the RAW drive problem?

Sep 28, 2013 1:47PM PDT

Hello! Recently, every time I try to plunge my WD external hard drive to my Windows XP computer, a strange message will pop out and asks me to format it before using. I have checked the properties. It is displayed as "RAW", not the previous NTFS. So, I guess that may be the problem. So, could you help you resolve my problem without any data loss? I have saved many important files, videos and pictures there. So, do you know how to re-access my data?
Thanks a lot!

Re-access data with freeware

What have you done to this WD external hard drive last time?
In fact, in my personal experiences, the RAW hard drive problems are often caused by many reasons, such as the improper operations, virus infections and even hard drive problems, etc. But, in most cases, it can be easily fixed by re-formatting.
So, you also can try to format it to fix its RAW problems.

Of course, since there are many important files, videos and pictures here on this hard drive, you'd better firstly try to retrieve all your data back off from this hard drive with a RAW drive data recovery program before the reformatting process.

As I know, there are many similar hard drive data recovery programs that can help you retrieve your inaccessible data off from this RAW hard drive and restore your RAW file system back into previous NTFS file system latter.
But not all of them can work as efficiently as you hope.

So, if you cannot make your own decision, you can try to use some RAW hard drive data recovery freeware at firstly, which often work much more efficiently than some paid ones, such as PC Inspector File Recovery, TestDisk, Recuva and iCare Data Recovery Free, etc.

Note: Do not forget to format this drive after the data recovery process and see whether the RAW problem can be completely fixed.
Next time, I hope you can be more careful about your important data and always back up everything important.

In fact, the RAW problem is really strange for me. I completely don't know what to do. But, your answer teaches me a lot. I have restored all my important files, videos and pictures off from my hard drive by applying your mentioned data recovery freeware and also fix the RAW problems. Now, I can still use this drive as before.
Thank you very much!

Step 1.

Step 1. This is very important. We'll need a second drive to hold all the files we need to copy out with the titles noted in the CNET Storage Forum sticky titled Lost and Found.

Step 2. Try the free and free to try.

Step 3. Please. Never omit details such as XP SP3 since I will always tell folk that XP's native limitations mean I expect this to happen. If you write "XP" I believe you and will never assume it is updated. I can't since the times I assumed it was updated resulted in long discussions (50+ posts) and then we find out they had re-installed the OS and before they updated XP they were "plunging."

Having a file on an external drive can't be called "safe", seeing how often they fail. So putting them there can't be called "saved". Better say "made a temporary copy". That's what it is. So you should never delete the original or forget to save it to at least 2 better backup locations.

If the drive is in the Raw state then you have smehow lost the patition that was there , use the free software that I linked to this post to see if you can recover that original partition.

We know often used file system like Biostar motherboard.
