Now go back to factory conditions (with the recovery disks) and see if everything works again.

The old expired antivirus?

Norton and others now block the internet as they expire.

Frankly I find this thuggish behavior which has caused far too many trips to repair counters across the world.
I have no kind words for this one.

Recovering from Win 7 Crash

Another possible solution is to check your available system restore points. If any of them are before the crash, choose one and see if your system operates normally.

By the way, the original poster said nothing about Norton or any other non-Windows programs. Extraneous comments like those won't help the poster.

Let me be very blunt here. It's a problem I encounter and the company is behaving like a thug.

BTW, I'm using the latest Avast anitivirus. But it is locked, too. I'm thinking that I have a bug in there that is really fouling things up.
I have an hp pavillion with Mozzila browser and e-mail.

The best solution with older PC with an unknown history (resurrected from what?) is to go back to factory conditions as I said above. If you think you can solve the problems by running some antivirus, just download one of the antivirus disks (to boot from) that are available and give it a try.

Limited info
Aug 29, 2013 11:46PM PDT

I've read your 1st post and later and no info of the PC being used here. All you're doing is cherry-picking a possible solution but you really need to provide the details. It won't hurt to tell us what is involved here and the nature of why the old PC was put aside if known. Otherwise, if you can't get anything going then all that's left is a total system restore/recovery from discs or partition. Also, if you never created the "Win 7 repair disc" that should be done from another win 7 based OS of same type 32 or 64-bit and class; Home Premium, etc.. Otherwise all the fixes are going to be hit and miss until you provide the details.
