how to remove programmes from permanently running

Hi
I would like to stop certain programmes from running constantly that do not need to be- e.g. if I press ctrl alt del there are a whole list of programmes running including digimax, cd burner etc which seem to be affecting the computers running performance and often cause it to freeze. I know I can stop them working by pressing ctrl alt del and remove but the next time the computer comes on they are there again.
Also I tried adware scan to stop spyware - to remove one file it said I had to subscribe to service which cst up to $50, is this normal?
Thanks

1. Use the forum Search for the program Starter. It can help.

2. With free tools like Spybot, Adaware, Stinger, Housecall and a few others, the only time I see people pay is if they think they want "one" tool that will fix the spyware issue. For some this is an education that no one solution fixes it. That is why I wrote about an Anti-Parasite Suite in the Security Forum.

You ought to note down all those extra programmes you don't want to start up on your start-up, go to each in it's own program access, and see if they have the option (or preference) of 'start on start-up' or something similar. More often than not, the programmes in themselves can be controlled by just de-selecting that option. There is also the possibility in some versions of Windows to unactivate automatic startups with your registry control. Take a look.

Go to Start, Run and type in msconfig, select, selective startup, and uncheck everything you don't want to run. Don't uncheck anything you are unsure about.
