You didn't say. iRip is common to recover tunes when they are only on the iPod but didn't anyone warn you to backup your tunes? If you don't, they tend to vanish and you're back ot iRip to rebuild.

On my ipod I use Itunes on my PC

to sync the files to my IPOD. So the songs only get to my Ipod from my PC.
