How to read a .doc without Word

I'm wanting to open a .doc from a friend but I don't have Office and I don't want to buy it. How can I read this?

Thank you Kees_B! It took me a while to get it to give me a code so I could access it but it finally came through and I've got my .doc open! Thank again! Love
