Question

How to point a domain to another URL using Nameservers

Feb 11, 2014 3:35AM PST

Hi there

I registered a domain with BlueHost but unless I buy hosting, I can't access the CNAME or A-records to make changes.

I have a tumblr that I would like my domain to point to, but the only thing I can modify/ have access to are the nameservers.

My question is, how do I use nameservers to point the domain to my tumblr?

Thanks!

transferring your domain out of there, because they are in the business of hosting (not so much domain registration), meaning that you'll most likely come across more limitations or gotchas in the future.

That said, you just need a DNS provider/host. Most domain registrars give this to you for free, hence my note above, but getting anything other than from your host, there's usually a small fee. Amazon's Route 53 or DNS Made Easy are two providers, for example.

A quick search revealed a company called CloudDNS that gives you a handful of records for free. I've never used them, but this may just meet your needs... worth a try, it's free.

so transferring the domain is the only choice?

Thanks for that info. I didn't realise some providers sold domain registrations without the options to actually use the domain! It seems pointless to be able to buy the domain but not give you the ability to actually link it to another site! Seems like I'll have to transfer it....

Cheers tho

You can keep your domain

there and simply update the DNS information over at BlueHost to another provider. I've listed a couple options above. Then you would be able to create any records you need using the provider you chose. Alternatively, which makes more sense to me, you could transfer your domain to a registrar that lets you create records in the first place. Then you don't need to involve another vendor just for DNS, since BlueHost doesn't let you create records.

Yeah the guys at Bluehost won't let me access DNS manager so I can't modifiy any records. I ended up transferring the domain to LCN, who let me add CNAMES, A records and also get an email address without hosting.

There you go.

That was the easiest and I think best long-term solution.

Hi
If you have bought the domain name and want to point the same domain name to another URL then first you have to change the nameserver then if you were thinking to point it to wordpress then you have to buy namespaces to use that domain name. The same held with me and I bought the domain name with godaddy and point it to one of my blog with wordpress.
