How to Modify Music Files in Windows 98

Jul 12, 2004 10:37PM PDT

The available column headings are Name, Size, Type and Modified, the last actually being the date. I want to add columns for Song Name, Artist, Beat, Length and several others. Have gone to file and Properties but if it is possible to do this from there I sure can't figure it out.

Also, if I achieve this, is there any way, other than Print Screen, to print this?

Maybe you should find a replacement to Explorer for keeping such a list?

Such as WHAT? How?

I didn't even know I was using Explorer. Sorry, but I am a complete neophyte and don't know anything about this.

Explorer in Windows 98

Explorer was trotted out in 1995 and has been update numerous times, but you have the 1998 version. What you ask for might not be possible. Do learn about this elder OS and try the RIGHT-CLICK on the bar that has the file names and properties to see if you can add more columns.

I'm unsure how a Windows 98 user can be a neophyte since this OS hasn't been offered for about 4 years. It's possible to find older machines and then I witness less than reputable companies loading 98 onto machines and foisting them onto unsuspecting users. But that's another discussion. My point is simple. It's a very old OS with limitiations, but it is old and a 98 owner would be fairly conversant with it's use.

As to replacements, I can't tell if you'd like MusicMatch or some other song/audio organizer. There are hundreds out thers and you need to go look.

Where?

Thanks Bob. I meant I'm new to the music files. Checked out your suggestions and no luck with the right click. Also checked out MusicMatch and several other organizers and have not been able to find what I want.

I did start an Excel file some time ago, with exactly what I want in it. It can be reorganized any way I want, and printed, BUT the actual music file cannot be linked. AND it is going to be very tedious adding in the several hundred new music files I have accumulated.

If I state exactly what I want in an organizer can you, or anyone, make a suggestion?

I want music organized by Song, Artist, Beat, Length, several different categories such as Organ, Irish, Country, Vocal, Piano, Scottish, Colour, Flower, Place, Name, and more (one song can fit in several different categories). Also want to note which of several CDs a song has been used on, and they can be used on several, and the numer of CDs is constantly growing so list has to be expandable. Want to be able to print this list in any order and with any of the categories omitted. A link to the song would be nice and I DO NOT WANT CDDB. I want this information, once organized, to reside permanently on my PC.

This is just like Christmas shopping where, either I have no idea what to buy someone, or, I know exactly what I want but can't find it.

Linking in Excel...

Hyperlinks in Excel sheets can link to the file. A double click here launched the file and the MP3 player.

Try that?

Yes, thanks Bob, that works. As you probably guessed, linking was about last in priority of my wishes as the excel worksheet still leaves me with a lot of manual work. So if anyone has an organizer they like I'm still open to suggestions.

It's VBA. You can do just anything you want then. Even a call to CDDB is possible.

For me, I tend to do such things in Visual Basic and for the database, it's now MySQL. That way the final result is royalty free and isn't tied to MS Office.
