Just last month I used Paint.Net to do that.

There are tutorials about it but I thought I'd share the app I used.

Its so easy if you can use the photoshop. After opening the file and doing some task then just save the file for web and devices, there you will get the option of saving that image as .png file.

Which tool

It all depends on the tool you are using.

For example if you are using gimp then all you have to do is save the file with a .png extension.

Note: You should uncheck the "Add background" option so that it remains transparent.

IrfanView

A free program for Windows is called IrfanView. When you save as a PNG you have the option to either use the main window color as the transparent color, otherwise, when you go to save you can click on the particular color in your image to be used as that transparent color.

Its a very easy task, if you are using photoshop then just after removing the background save the images for web and devices in .png format.
