General discussion

how to join AVI and WAV file

Mar 15, 2011 2:58AM PDT

Hello people : I'm sure this is an easy one for you guys.
I had my Sony 8mm cassettes converted to digital and stored in an external HD. This job was done by a photographer whom I supposed had the adequate equipment. But I have each cassette in a folder which contains the audio (wav) and video (avi) separated. He told me I had to use an edition program like adobe or similar.
question 1) what program do you recomend for converting to DVD compatible.

question 2 ) how do I garantee correct sincronization of both files ?
Thanks for reading, regards, Leonardo.

Not easy I fear.

While I could use Virtual Dub to bring in the audio I fear that most would ask me to write a tutorial in the replies here. This is why you should look at Video Editors which there are too many to choose from.

In a video editor you can drop in the sound track, move it around to get the sync then create your DVD.

thanks Bob, so I see it's a bit of artwork here, no automatic sincronization point as far as I understand according to your words. I don't know if its ethical for you to recommend me a Video Editor, but if thats not an issue, I would aprecciate it.

If I were to give a nod

It would be to get it on some Apple computer and any of the fine video editors that Apple supplies. Why? Because this might be your first time at video editing and you might be frustrated at most PC software today.

About the "automatic sync." I think there is such out there but so far, without fail all sync incorrectly. This is why most folk add the audio track and then nudge it back and forth till they think it's right.

Sometime when we don't have the whole story,

everything sounded strange. I know the photographer did it..but why this way? Didn't the photographer gave you a playable video?

Yes there are software that can do this but don't know which one (I have never done it).

I agree with you Ahtoi, I dont know why it was done this way. He gave me two prices, with or without edition. But I understood that EDITION meant special effect, cutting out blank spaces, equalizing picture and audio quality, putting in jumppoints etc etc. I did not know that he was refering to edition in this matter.
I think it would be better to do it all over, on my own, because the time I am going to spend editing this is the same if I do it all over again. What do I need to capture analogue video and sound all in one and sincronized ? In good quality of course.

I am not much with 8mm cassette either.

Can you play these on a vcr or movie camera? I probably would get a dvd recorder and record everything in dvd discs and later you can put them in your computer and edit them. There are many capable software program that can do this. Of course there are devices that can capture the video directly to the computer harddrive as well but it has been my experience that recording to a dvd record is the best way to do it..in my opinion.

RECORDING TO DVD
Mar 16, 2011 5:00AM PDT

You mean I must use a software on my pc and record the 8 mm tapes in REAL TIME ?
Do you know of any software for this ?

The short answer is...yes.

But I don't like that method. I preferred to play the video to a standalone "dvd recorder" and create the dvd with that recorder.

You may try this Video Editor, it's a nice video editing software that can help you edit, join, split, trim, crop, convert and cut video, my friends recommend it to me, it's easy to use and works pretty well for me, it embeds many special effects. I had made a video with it and the video got award, that's pretty cool. Here is the free download link.
