How to install VB6 (Basic) under Windows Vista?

Jul 14, 2007 6:25AM PDT

I tried unsuccessfully to install VB under Win. Vista. After updating JAVA, it prompts directly to install MSDN. But even insert the disk MSDN 1 and MSDN 2 into CD rom, still failed. It prompts right back Vista desktop. Any idea?

Weird. It just works here.

I read a discussion about this and was surprised the VB 6 installs but the later 2 versions fail. I don't have a clue why you are having an install issue but one person complained to me and when they showed me it failing the CDs were not originals but (bad) copies. There was nothing I could do for them except hand them the Microsoft 800 number to get replacement media.

Can't install VB6 under Vista
Jul 14, 2007 4:45PM PDT

Mine is original CD's. I did select compatible to NT4 and disable everything possible also run as admin. but still get error 530 and prompts directly to install MSDN. The CD install under WinXP works fine! Since then I can not re-install, could not fine Microsoft Visual Studio to do Un-install, unless I must reformat or re-install Win Vista. But again could not intall VB6. Please help!

Can't tell why you have an issue.

Let's compare machines?

Mine:
ACER w/CoreDuo, 1GB RAM (light!), 80GB HD, DVDRW, wifi.
The OS is stock.
Norton tossed out with prejudice. No defender also.
Free AVG and the standard Vista firewall.

Nothing special done during install.

Today I find many are installing Antivirus Suites and those can be problematic (same with Norton.)

Let's compare..

Mine is Duo Core Intell 6600/4GB of Ram, 400G Serial SATA300 H/drive.
Disable Norton Anv/Base installation => Error 530 ..
I've done it at least 20 times: including Reformat HD/Re-install Vista from fresh then re-install VB after loading Vista, no other software on it/still same error!

Sorry, I don't have a 4G machine to test on.

I know there were errors with CodeWarrior with 1G, 2G, 3G and 4G RAM. I don't have the test machine to compare.

There is no Norton at all on my machine. Symantec's software has become too intrusive and has bolloxed up too many times so I don't allow it.

That fresh install of Vista may be a fine clue since I'm using some laptop with a preinstalled Vista. Your install is from retail so who knows what the heck may be off kilter.

Sorry, I don't see why yet.

PS> Some are reporting they have to run the old dev tools in Virtual PC.

Let me clarify one thing.

I'm talking about the base install, not the service packs. Those have issues and I won't be duplicating web content about that here.
