Re: two os'es

- If you have 2 hard disks you can install Windows 10 on the one, and Linux on the second and then when booting from another than the default choose the other,
- If you have one hard disk, first install Windows 10; don't use the full disk but leave enough space to install Linux later. This is dual boot and you have to choose at each boot what OS to boot into.
- Or install Linux in a virtual hard drive under Windows 10.

"We only lose what we don't backup."

Since installing an OS unless we use VirtualBox and even then we must be safeguarding what we can't lose with backups. Only your newest owners of Smart Phones and PCs think you can use such without backups of what we can't lose.

I see Kees noted VirualBox. That's my answer here too since you might not have your backups going yet.

depends

depends on the linux distro you use. IMO, linux mint, and any Ubuntu related distro are some of the easiest to install as a dual boot. Normally it will ask if you want to install beside the current installed os. You say yes and it will install the dual boot. Usually a simple online search will help you find the exact steps needed to install a dual boot. for example use "dualboot win10 and linux mint" and the results will take you to pages that will help.

One thing, things happen so dont install without a backup of files you cannot afford to lose or a drive image.

Why dual boot at all ?

These days we can put a Linux distro on a flash drive and make it persistent .
Than you have no worries about messing up your HDD.

I have Ubuntu Mate on a 16 GB flash drive for the last year and love it , Plus it's portable and I can use it on other computers.
