I find that some laptops don't catch the USB DVDRW drive the first time. Also, I've run into some machines that some ports don't work for such an install.
And others require a dance. That is you have to set it up, then let it fail then control+alt+delete and it sees it the next time.
THERE IS NOT SET ALWAYS WORK METHOD. This can really upset those new to this.
Frankly I'd just replace the internal ODD to save myself lost time.

Hello,
Please, I hope someone can help me. I would really appreciate it. I have given great detail on my (hopefully simple) problem so it helps one to understand my problem.
Here is a list showing what I'm working with:
LAPTOP: HP Pavilion dv6500.
INTERNAL HD: SanDisk Ultra II Solid State Drive (120GB).
EXTERNAL CD/DVD DRIVE: USB2.0 Slim Portable Optical Drive.
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (32-bit or 64-bit Software (I've tried both, but I'm positive I should use the 32-bit disc)).
I want to install an OS on a new hard drive which I installed. But, as the laptop's internal disk drive doesn't recognise CD/DVDs, I've attached a brand new external USB CD/DVD Drive. Though I have a problem.
Here's what happens:
1. I power the laptop on. (With the Windows 7 (32-Bit) disc inside the plugged in external USB CD/DVD Drive which powers up too)
2. Options are given as follows:
- Press <ESC> to enable startup message.
- <F1> to enter System Information.
- <F9> to change boot device order.
- <F2> to startup check.
- <F10> to enter SETUP.
- <F11> to System Recovery.
3. I select nothing.
4. It beeps LOUDLY.
5. Asks for Administrator Password (I enter it).
6. Then the message appears 'Operating System Not Found'
What do I do? So...
(I was expecting the laptop to recognise the disc loaded in the CD/DVD Drive and take me through setting up the OS, but of course, it's never that simple).
I've tried other ways too. As follows:
1. I chose <F9> (after powering on) to change the boot order to boot my external USB CD/DVD Drive first before anything. Then boots-up the next device on the list, but I don't think this matters???
2. It beeps LOUDLY.
3. Asks for Administrator Password (I enter it)
4. 'Boot Menu' window shows a list (below):
- 2. Notebook Hard Drive.
- <Enter Setup>
5. I choose <Enter Setup>
6. The PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility is then shown on my screen.
7. I choose System Configuration.
8. Boot Options.
9. Boot Order.
10. I am then given the choice of devices to rearrange. As follows:
- ATAPI CD/DVD ROM Drive (I am positive this is the Laptop's internal CD/DVD Drive)
- Notebook Hard Drive
- USB Hard Drive
- USB Floppy
- USB Diskette on Key
- !Network Adaptor (This will be disabled as it has an exclamation mark)
(As you can see, it has not recognised my external CD/DVD drive)
So again, I'm stuck. What can or do I do?
I hope someone can help. I would really appreciate it.
Thanks
Matt
