General discussion

how to? IE

Mar 26, 2007 7:33AM PDT

I would like to know how could I install in my laptop both IE 6 and IE 7. I "googled" it but I couldn't understand about a virtual something.
Anyway how coudld I do this?, of course I would like to do this in the simplest way possible, yes it has to be in the same computer.
The reason I want to do this is pretty obvious, I would like to be able to preview my web site desing in both versions of IE.

thanks a lot, Marcelo.

Re: both IE6 and IE7

IE7, when installed, replaces IE6 in the same instance of the OS. What you need, I think, is a multiboot system offering different partitions and a boot manager that lets you choose between the one and the other. I don't know if XP supports this for 2 copies of XP on the same machine, but it certainly does for XP and 98 or XP and Vista.

Here's a link: http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10877_11-6157570.html
Better post in the Vista or XP forum if you decide to go this way and need more help.

Virtual PC
Mar 26, 2007 12:39PM PDT

You need software like this

* http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/11/30/ie6-and-ie7-running-on-a-single-machine.aspx

I think that this would be easiest way for you, since I don't recommend having a multi-boot system. Virtual PC is basically a computer within your computer. So, with this program, you can book up a computer on your screen... it has a start button, etc, and you can install on it whichever software you like... like IE6.

PS: If you have XP, you need Virtual PC 2004, not the new 2007 version.

Good luck and hope this helps.

yes..
Mar 27, 2007 4:42AM PDT

that's probably what i'll have to do, i've heard of it, but was hoping there was some other way, and of course I'm not buying vista just for this, besides you are right having to os sucks.
Somebody mentioned something about installing ie6 and then when installing ie7 just choose a different folder for installations so that it wouln't overwrite ie6 or something like that, but when i click install in ie7 the .exe takes over, and there are no options, anybody knows about this?

thanks for your help.

Have you tried vise versa?

yes but
Mar 27, 2007 11:13AM PDT

it doesnt work, after you have ie 7 and you try to install any other (older) version it doesnt work, it says something about already having a newer version...whatever.
I ll read that article, thanks

I apologise in advance
Apr 30, 2007 7:23PM PDT

but aren't you a system analyst?

I am shocked you didn't even mention or hint towards emulation software. I use many Virtual Machines in Microsoft Virtual PC on a day to day basis and thats mainly for casual use.

A quick Google will quickly reveal a download for Virtual PC.

OK
May 2, 2007 12:27PM PDT

* Double-click the program on your desktop
* The "Virtual PC Console" should come up
* You want to go File > New Virtual Machine Wizard
* Hit "Next" twice, and then select a folder to store the files it will create
* Hit "Next" and then select the OS you are going to install (remember you must have the official discs to install the OS, just as if you formatted your PC)
* Select how much RAM you want to sacrifice from the machine you are physically towards the Virtual PC (use recommended if don't know)
* Then after that, select "A new virtual hard disc"
* Just hit next if it's in the folder you want it
* Now select what you created in the Console, and it start
* You will see a PC boot up, but it will tell you there is no OS
* Put the OS installation CD's in your CD-Rom drive (which is also the CD-Rom drive of your virtual machine)
* Reboot the virtual OS (close it) or just hit a button on your keyboard
* Install OS as you would for a regular PC

Let me know if that works for you.

ohhh ok
May 2, 2007 3:38PM PDT

ohhh so that's how i do it.
maybe I should have know, or maybe should have told me before.
But that will probably work, thanks.

On the other hand....I already uninstall tha virtual pc thing a few weeks ago, when i formatted my pc, so i would have to get it and install it again to do that, which i was going to ...but

I was watching this adobe's cs3 realease video, and they mentioned something about dreamweaver cs3, having a way to test your pages in any browser and any version you want. I'alredy bought cs3 suite (with dreamweaver cs3 of course) and it should arrive in the next few days.

Do you know about that feature, I'm only intrested in ie6 and ie7 though, but will that avoid me the need of that virtual pc thing?

thanks a lot, Marcelo.

only just touching on Web Design at the moment, but you might want to broaden your horizons a bit and extend your testing beyond Microsoft Inrernet Explorer to the alternate browsers such as Firefox, Opera, and Netscape. Thankfully they all run together on one Operating System, and then you can guarantee your web page works on all the popular browsers. Even test it on Mac and Linux browsers, if you can, too.

OK
May 3, 2007 5:51AM PDT

well thanks, but I know all of that. I do test my pages in safari, firefox and ie, and I dont care about the other.

My problem was that I want to test my pages in different versions of ie, but windows doesnt allow users to install multiple versions of its browser.

So to that, right now, I have ie 6 installed in my pc and firefox 2.0 so that I can then (after uploading...which sucks) test my page in ie 7 in some other computer.

And that is not the right way to do it....

thanks, Marcelo.

but when you said "I'm only intrested in ie6 and ie7 though" in your other post, that led me to believe exactly that Wink

Good luck Happy

As I say
May 17, 2007 11:05PM PDT

to people on MSN who do this "?" to me, try reading over what I said.

You said, you were only bothered about IE6 and 7 in your post when you said you wanted to test your site. And then me, thinking you had forgotten Firefox, Opera, Netscape, Safari, etc etc, mentioned this to you.

You then said you had remembered them and were also testing them (or something along those lines).

And I said OK, but it didnt sound like that to me.

Aiight?

Browser Compatibility Check
If you?ve ever added the line ?This site best viewed in...? to your site, you know how difficult it can be to ensure a consistent experience across multiple browsers on a variety of operating systems. Besides the extra time it takes to test your code on multiple platforms, keeping up with the latest versions of browsers and their capabilities can be a frustrating experience. The new Browser Compatibility Check feature in Dreamweaver CS3?which generates reports that identify CSS-related issues in a variety of browsers?can handle all of the browser-related details, allowing you to focus on creating great-looking sites. To reduce browser errors, Dreamweaver CS3 provides a page report that flags browser compatibility issues. In code view, issues are flagged with green underlining, so you know exactly where the problem is. Once the problem has been identified, you can quickly fix it.

-- Copied from http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/pressroom/pressmaterials/pdfs/cs3_dreamweaver_whatsnew.pdf

So yes, it sounds like you don't need VPC 2004, considering CS3 will tell you what is and what is not compatible.

coool
May 3, 2007 5:58AM PDT

that is just what i needed to hear, besides with device central, i can even test my pages in opera and hand held devices......

thanks a lot!!!

Marcelo.

that will do for my question....but i have a new one...hahaha

I was reading on the dreamweaver cs3 new features....and they talk a lot about the ability to import native .ai .psd illustrator and photoshop files and also flash files which i'm confused will i be able to impor .fla files?

....anyway my real question is.....how does dreamweaver deal with file sizes...i mean when you work on websites you try to get you images as small as you can, even using gif's if possible.....then do we want to have .psd files?....I know I wont be uploading my psd files...but then how is tha feature so useful?

thanks, Marcelo.

Perhaps
May 3, 2007 3:01PM PDT

The only thing I can think of right now is that it will let you important high quality, lets say PSD files, so you dont need to convert it or anything or "save as" ... so just to make your life easier, but eventually, when you upload the site, it will convert it to something more web appropriate. Same with, if it does indeed do that, FLA files... maybe you can and it will convert it to SWF for you. This is just a guess though, I don't own the software yet.

yes...i dont know...
May 3, 2007 4:18PM PDT

i read the pdf article tha you gave me the url to, and it was really helpfull, and it says that, that will allow me to for example edit the pdf directly from dreamweaver...i mean not really inside dreamweaver...but when you select and image you will have a edit button that will launch photoshop and open that psd file, that is pretty cool.

So I think it probably works like...you just add the psd, and set it's export or save for web values...for example jpg at 72 ppi..etc, so it will upload that jpg but let you have the pdf in hand...for editing.....

anyway...thanks for your help, and i will probably spend some time with it as soon as i get it, hopefully next week, and i'll let you know.

thanks again, Marcelo.
