Question

how to get pass McAfee endpoint encryption on unused latitud

Apr 8, 2015 4:37AM PDT

my cousin received a new latitude E7440 from her now defunct health care employer. she never used it and continued using her old inspiron. now the company and anyone associated with tech is long gone (over 6 months).
she lost or trashed the user id and password asked on the endpoint start up page. is there a was to convert this computer to become her personal computer ? her new company doesn't want it. is there a way to eliminate or bypass endpoint encryption. again this computer was never used so has no sensitive files in storage. no files have been stored at all. it has never been logged into

Dell has Windows in various versions downloadable. You might have to input the Dell Windows product key to activate. Then the usual Dell windows, drivers and Dell Quickset install.

I'd be more specific but which windows was not revealed. Dell Forums cover this very often.

Unless, of course, the drive is encrypted in the same way

as Bit Locker encrypts the drive.

Even if you take out the encrypted drive and replace it with a brand new one, you still cannot use the machine because Bit Locker is embedded in the BIOS and will lock up the machine and also prevent access to the BIOS.

It's a PITA when a hard drive fails as we have to go through the unlock process before we can re-image the laptop.
And no, jumping those two pins doesn't work either.

EndPoint is a Symantec product. They may be able to help

Windows 7 pro OA is installed

Might there not be a chip in the motherboard encoded with endpoint encryption making reinstalling windows futile? I'd just like to make it useful for her as she is quite physically disabled and has a limited income.

Good then you are done?

went to the dell community site you posted

I could not find Windows 7 PRO OA posted or listed. What are your thoughts? Of course I want to do this the right way but only if its worth the effort and expense for my cousin as she has limited income. I appreciate your input. I am just not sure if the MacAfee endpoint encryption renders the whole idea futile even if I were to replace the motherboard and hard drive. What do you think?

It may be only Windows 7 Home or such.

Sometimes you get a client that is stuck on some exact version. Since you are only entitled to the version that shipped with the laptop, that's all they'll get. If they want another they have to pay up.

And other times they get a laptop from a business that has lockdowns on it. We have to wait for them to soften up a bit to fix it at times.

Why replace all that hardware for what looks like the clean install will clear up?
