Question

How to get MP3 music off DVD-R disks

Oct 8, 2011 2:00AM PDT

I have Memorex 16X DVD-R's that I backed up my MP3 music on. Now that I have an external hard drive, I want to copy those DVD-R's to the new drive. I put in the MP3 DVD-R in my computer, select all, and right-click to copy, then my computer freezes up, and it will not un-freeze unless I eject the disk. I had 2 computer shops tell me it's not the computer, and that it's the DVD media itself. I have also tried to get the music off the disks by using 3 different computers with the exact same freeze-up results. Can anyone tell me if there's a way to get my music off these DVD-R's? Even if I have to buy a program to do so, it would be worth it, because I have alot invested in these music downloads. Any help is appreciated!!! Thanks!

you select just one file, as a test?

How many files in this, 'select all'?

It's a great idea to backup things. And DVD-R are quite good for it.

What happens if you don't use ctrl-A, ctrl-C and ctrl-V, but drag and drop only one to a new folder on your internal hard disk? Then if you drag and drop 10? Then 100? Or subfolder by subfolder?

What happens if you use copy (or xcopy if there are subfolders) from the command prompt to copy those files to (a new folder on) your internal hard disk?

What happens if you use a Linux Live version to do that copy?

Ctrl-A+ctrl-C in Windows aren't the only way to do this! Any of the 3 alternatives I mentioned might work.

it could be that your antivirus (or other protection software) is set to check mp3's for viruses. Then selecting a whole DVD might take some time (that you interpret as a freeze in stead of your antivirus doing it's job).
If that's the case simple changing that setting or disabling that software might help.

What does the processes tab of Task Manager show during this 'freeze'?
