Resolved Question

How to get dvd writer to work?

Sep 5, 2011 5:55AM PDT

Yes, Samsung, I have purchased one of your External DVD-Writers (USB-powered) Model SE-S084 serial number: R6186GSZ137677K Manufactured JJanuary, 2010.

I purchased this, via Amazon.com, yet NO C.D. came with the DVD-Writer. Wasn't the basic drive program supposed to come, WITH the drive?

Since purchase, I have tried, and succeeded, in downloading up to a dozen programs "compatable with" your drive.

Since purchase, I have FAILED to make the RECORDING part, of the DVD-Writer work. It wont turn on, period. When I check my computer, I find that I have NO drivers, installed.

All that I can tell you, about my computer is that it is a desk top, operating Windows XP. As long as it turns on, this is all I know. PLEASE, do not ask for further information, which I have no ideas how to find.

Just accept that I am operating on Windows, and I would like to copy videos, saved as Windows Media Player, to disk.

Using ONLY this information, what is your recommendation?

Windows XP supports a DVD-burner without any additional drivers. Those are built in.

Most burners (but I can't check yours) come with an OEM copy of burning software (e.g. Nero). If yours didn't an excellent free burning program is cdburnerxp (a free download).

Telling what does not happen (it doesn't turn on) is much less informative than telling what does happen if you try to burn a file to disk using that program. But you didn't tell that.

It's possible, of course, it's defective. Then return it under warranty. But before you do that, I'd see if you can find some local support (a computer savy family member or friend or colleague) to try it.

Kees_b,

Thank You for the information. My computer STILL REFUSES to access the DVD writer.

At this point, I, fully, believe that Samsung sold me a DEFECTIVE drive. No program, that I download, will work with this particular drive.

Since the resst of my computer works just fine, I amleft to assume that Samsung sold me a very DEFECTIVE drive.

I thereforew, encourage ALL c-net users, including yourself, to AVOID Samsung drives. It is obvious that these drives are as "reliable" as a politicians promise.

I am giving up, on this piece of junk, since I have been working, to correct this problem, for MONTHS (as in 8 months).

Thank you for the information. It will, probably work on other drives. Just NOT on Samsung.

I can write that setup of gear today is no longer free. It pains too many that this is how things are done today. Low prices mean no support.

Too bad a guru friend didn't borrow it for a test spin and then return it if dead to Amazon.

It wasn't Samsung that sold you the drive.

It was Amazon. And, for cases like this, they give warranty (which, in this case, is free replacement).
